DO YOU KNOW THE ISCC EU AND ISCC PLUS PROTOCOL?

We increasingly demand sustainable and environmentally friendly products, forcing organizations to adapt to this changing landscape and implement sustainable and effective requirements to ensure the protection of our environment.

In response, packaging manufacturers and biofuel supply chains are joining forces to ensure that the production of these products is sustainable and responsible.

We already know that biofuel supply chains are very complex, bringing with them a wide range of environmental impacts. Therefore, verification from the production level to final consumption provides us with proof of the sustainability of biomass and fuels.

The entry into force of the European Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC) set the objective of replacing 101% of fossil fuel consumption through the use of biofuels. Regarding the origin of these biofuels suitable for this purpose, they must increasingly come from resources certified as sustainable. This guarantee of certified sustainable products is provided by... ISCC, being one of the most widely accepted standards in this area.

This opportunity can help companies maintain and increase their business opportunities in many sustainable product sectors (fuel, food, chemical sector).

What is ISCC?

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) It is an international certification program for biomass and bioenergy production that focuses on land use sustainability, traceability, and greenhouse gas verification throughout the entire supply chain.

Third-party certification for the ISCC system provides proof of conformity for the European biofuels market under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD). ISCC applies to all types of biomass-based fuels, from farmers producing the raw material to industrial production facilities.

ISCC EU or ISCC PLUS?

Within ISCC, two systems are distinguished:

ISCC EU It can be applied to demonstrate compliance with the statutory requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC as amended by Directive (EU) 2015/1513 (RED), and Directive 2009/30/EC on fuel quality as amended by Directive (EU) 2015/1513 (FQD)2 for all Member States of the European Union.

ISCC PLUS It is the certification system applicable to all markets not regulated by the RED and FQD (e.g., food, feed, chemical/technical, or bioenergy markets outside the European Union). This system covers the same requirements as the ISCC EU, but can be customized through the application of additional voluntary addenda.

Steps for certification

✅ Step 1: Market. Understanding how ISCC certification works for companies that trade different commodities for various markets. To determine the scope of certification, we consider these three markets:

      • Energy: Biofuels, recycled carbon fuels, and non-biological renewable fuels. Biogas/biomethane. Bioliquids. Solid biomass.
      • Industrial Applications.
      • Food and feed.

✅ Step 2: Certification Body. Choose a certification body recognized by ISCC and sign a contract with the certification body.

✅ Step 3: Registration. You must register with ISCC and complete the registration form. Sign the system usage agreement with ISCC and receive your ISCC registration number.

✅ Step 4: Implementation of ISCC requirements. Conducting a self-assessment (internal audit).

✅ Step 5: Audit.

✅ Step 6: Issuance of the certificate and publication on the website ISCC.

If your company needs to obtain ISCC EU or ISCC PLUS certification, at Incyma we’ll support you throughout the implementation of sustainability schemes.
